| Beginning to Kothmale ReseviorProject |

Kothmale scheme is one of the major water
schemes which was set up as one of the urgent development projects of Mahaweli. The
first thing was to construct a dam across the river and divert the water
in to the powerhouse and also to build a tunnel to release the water back
to the river. The main purpose of this project is to produce electricity.
There will be an additional water supply at Polgolla as a result of this
water management. |

In
1961 United States of America assisted Sri Lanka to start this project.
From 1964 to 1968 the US Development Program and Food and Agricultural
Organistation also helped.

Between 1973 and 1976 a deligation from an Indian Firm (Chapcose Water and
Electricity Development Expert Service Limited ) visited Sri Lanka to
study this project. They looked it over.

set up in 1978 by the participation of Kenedy and Donkin Company and
William Halcroa and Shareholders United Kingdom. |
